Work Placement Details
Most of placements are offered in the following fields:
- Beef;
- Crops;
- Dairy;
- Fruits and Vegetables/Farmers’ Market;
- Greenhouse/Nursery/Garden Centre;
- Equine Husbandry;
- Sheep;
- Swine;
- Specialized Placement
The internship period:
- The intern may be involved and rotate in all areas of operation.
- Generally the intern will be required to have the ability to work independently, supported regarding practical matters
- Do expect to be treated professionally. And do act professionally at all times.
- Don't expect internships to just be handed to you; internships must be earned, as with any job.
- Don't be afraid to ask questions. And do be open to learning new skills and methodologies.
- Don't burn any bridges -- even if your internship was not the best.
- Do enjoy your internship!
Asking Questions is Part of Learning
While working as an intern be open to learning new skills.
Most host farm owners have years of experience and have learned through trial and error.
By asking the “Why’s” of an operation, you’ll gain valuable knowledge that may prevent you from making some of the same mistakes.
Be Respectful
Keep in mind that your host farm has probably invested everything they have in maintaining their farm.
Most farmers have a personal relationship with their animals and want them to be cared for in the best possible manner.
